Last week I had a wonderful time shooting someone very special to us, the Portuguese people.
I was sent to take some pictures of João Garcia…
João Garcia is one of the greatest mountaineers of all-time.
In 1999, he became the first Portuguese mountaineer to climb Mount Everest by its north face route, without supplementary oxygen. On the way down his fellow climber Pascal Debrouwer fell to his death and João lost his nose and part of his fingers from severe frostbite.
On the 17th April 2010 he reached the top of the Annapurna without the aid of supplemental oxygen, becoming the 10th man of all time to climb all 14 eight-thousanders without bottled oxygen or Sherpas.
Can anyone image the sheer emotional and physical endurance needed to accomplish something like that? After suffering from the death of a friend and spending several months in a hospital bed having his nose rebuilt and part of his fingers amputated?
That is the stuff João Garcia is made of.
Despite being for work I’ve decided to also take the Hasselblad and do something for myself and for Cooking Film.
